7. If we had ranked voting a third party would be more viable but without it that isn't a choice.

Even a rout by the GOP still means getting 40% of the vote. 40% is 38% more than any third party likely will in 2020. Without ranked voting a third party would simply split the vote and guarantee even worse conservative losses in 2022 & 2024.

As an example say conservatives (not necessarily Republicans) make up 50% of the voters. Based on turnout that could be anywhere from 45% to 55%. If the new conservative party gets 30% and the old GOP gets 20% and the Democrats gets 50% then due to winner take all it is going to be a rout of the most epic proportions.

With ranked voting maybe they have a chance to shift voters over without losing everything in sight for years upon years. However the GOP has fought hard against ranked voting at the state level (so has the Democratic party).
