In reply to the discussion: Nikki Haley gets roasted by AOC [View all]NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)61. Let's see her win a statewide election first.
Her appeal and her message is narrowly focused to appeal to her very blue and very safe district (and her left-most fans) however, even the Democratic voters in places like Peoria or DesMoines would likely view her as being too extreme and too inexperienced. It's no secret that New England style Democrats do not do well in the Heartland or in Appalachia. (see: Joe Manchin)
The sooner, after she turns 35, the better!
Age has nothing to do with it. What we need is experience and someone who knows how to appeal to all citizens (not just a limited segment) and who can be competitive on a large scale outside of a small district. Statewide and national politics are very different. Just because someone is "35" doesn't mean that they have the experience necessary.
Personally, I think the age should be raised. Back when it was set at "35" by the Constitution in 1787 the life expectancy in America at that time was about 38 years for a white male. Of course, people lived longer, but on average, they didn't. Things were challenging. As a result, the minimum age of 35 made sense at the time. Now, it no longer makes sense. It's time to raise the minimum age for POTUS to be 40. Maturity an experience are more important than eagerness and spunk, or piss-&-vinegar.
