It is a two way street. The party needs both ends of the spectrum it now contains to maintain a big enough tent to maintain power on a national basis. Run off the left quarter to a third of our party and say hello to perma rule by the Rethugs at every level. No amount of rightward drift (in a futile attempt to make up for the lost voters from the left end) at that point will work.

Go full stop slightly to barely left of center and then deep into centre right territory chasing centre right wing Republican suburbanites and it will be the death knell of the Democratic Party, especially with the coming demographic shifts that will eventually mitigate and then end the white boomers and older white gens as RW enabling forces.
