Speaking of the "local" fighters as you call them, I always thought that they were just as susceptible to brain injuries as the elite fighters, maybe more so, since so many of them didn't have very much of a defense and took more of a pounding than the highly talented fighters did who were better at ducking punches and had much better footwork.
BTW, I don't know if you get HBO or not, but on a recent episode of Real Sports, they have a very interesting segment that starts off with Danny Carcillo, who played with several teams in the NHL as a hockey "enforcer." They interviewed several other banged up athletes as well, all of whom suffered brain injuries during their careers. Suffering from devastating effects of brain injury, Carcillo went to the Peruvian jungle to experiment with a psychedelic drug potion, kind of similar to LSD I guess, that was illegal in the US. A single dose of it seemingly cured him. Other athletes with terrible symptoms started getting treated with psychedelics soon after, and it appears that the success rate is so amazing that some of the more famous medical institutions in the US are now looking seriously into psychedelics to treat such traumatized patients.
IMO, Real Sports is one of the best shows, if not the best show, on TV because of the way it does NOT glamorize sports, but the way it exposes sports instead. Plus there are a lot of other reasons it's a great show as well.
