Just like you clip the claws on dogs. So the catss claws are left blunted so they cant scratch the furniture.
I had to leave my cat at a cat hotel for a few days and it was required by the owners. My cat didnt seem to mind and only started scratching the furniture when his claws got sharp again. I think scratching furniture is because it keep their claws healthy and in shape.

Yay...but it will scratch furniture and that might not be good! Some of that furniture just might

A lot of cat posts, cardboard scratches, carpet covered scratches, and of course a big cat tree.

I've had 4 cats and none of them scratched the furniture. One was declawed but the others not.
