In reply to the discussion: Just heard on CBS that the Bidens will be adopting a cat! [View all]Merlot
(9,696 posts)68. My cats were only "well behaved" after a lot of convincing!
I had a lot of scratching posts, at least one in every room (even the bathroom). I placed them strategically - if the cats started to claw the couch, I'd put a scratching post in the exact spot against the couch. After a while they just started scratching on the posts and I would move them to a better location and the cat would follow.
Also, I sprinkled catnip and a few treats on the base of the posts.
And, this is important, I have very tall scratching posts. To many posts are actually to short for the cat to get a good stretch with their scratching.

A lot of cat posts, cardboard scratches, carpet covered scratches, and of course a big cat tree.

I've had 4 cats and none of them scratched the furniture. One was declawed but the others not.
