The Dunning-Kruger cognitive bias is very apt for our situation. The more I learn, the more I find that I don't know. The world is complicated and there is a lot of information out there. Conversely, people who are not as informed or curious, often are more sure of what they know (and are very wrong about). My wife was talking about this the other day. Some right winger was talking about how "masks don't work" and she cited a bunch of studies that showed the effectiveness of masks against spreading the coronavirus. The guy simply said, "I disagree", and thought he had won the argument. Who cares if you disagree or not, your disagreement is irrelevant! The facts are the facts, if you can produce studies, or at least one study, that shows that masks have no substantial protective qualities, then you can disagree, but as has been said, people think that their opinions have the same weight as our facts and evidence.
