(58,785 posts)We own "snowbird" property down there, but it's so modest that any deflation in its value should be offset by decrease in whatever we might choose to replace it. (I'm thinking a MH park again in a well policed retiree area since I'd expect crime to rise unacceptably in our rural area. Very beautiful, but interior FL has a lot of poverty, not like the retiree coasts.) And we live within a day's drive in the United States so could return home for medical care after the local hospitals become unacceptable.
I don't worry about passports, welcome, etc. Like any impoverished island, tourists bringing in money would be courted and areas where Americans wintered protected from the locals.
It'd be extremely hard on and unfair to the Floridians who wanted to remain Americans, of course. I'm sure they never thought they could find themselves citizens of third-world type country oppressed and even endangered by an authoritarian government. We would have to offer resettlement aid to fellow citizens who wanted to move north.
