3. They've been getting away with it for decades; why put away a perfectly good tool when it works?

Just look at what Reagan said in his "Iran/Contra 'apology' speech":

"I told the American people I did not trade arms for hostages. My heart and my best intentions still tell me that's true, but the facts and the evidence tell me it is not."

Zero sign of an apology in the entire thing. They can get away with it so long as it's =presented= in a compelling manner, with energy of some sort, be it friendly, challenging, etc. People don't listen to the words, they only get the energy.

"Blah blah blah GINGER blah blah blah..."
