That said, I don't think he was going to sit by as the entire judicial system was politicized and the institution destroyed going forward.

I don't think he HAD to, but I actually do believe he WOULD have. Those who hate Roberts may need to get some perspective. He's the "best" of the worst--if for no other reason, perhaps, than he really does want the legacy of the court to continue.
