6. What happened to the GOP was the Civil Rights Act.

Prior to that act, the GOP was not much of a viable national party. Eisenhower won but he won on the back of the New Deal. From 1933 to 1969, Republicans held the White House for only eight years.

But LBJ signed away the South and that provided the Republican Party a new lease on life. Nixon then used his Southern Strategy to appeal to white Southern voters and the rest is history. The GOP lost its regional support in the Northeast and had to grow it in the South, which they did. That forced 'em to become more and more conservative and because of it, we've got the party we have today.
