I bought into that narrative once, after Obama was elected (demographics=destiny). Turns out that wasn't correct. When you, as a party, have no qualms about starving people to protect corporations, those corporations will work to keep you in power. Give them unlimited "political speech" rights and voila, you have functional minority rule. It helps when those in power aren't ideologically moored to any concept other than retention and/ or expansion of power. It's going to be a very tough nut to crack.
