(29,400 posts)"But I think the vast majority of Trump's supporters are people who are in pain, who are struggling economically, who are worried to death that their kids are going to be in even worse shape economically than they are, and they turned to Trump because Trump said things that made sense. He said he was going to take on the establishment, and he was going to provide health care to everybody. You know what, it's pretty much what I said."
"I do not believe that most of the people who are thinking about voting for Mr. Trump are racist or sexist."
No, Bernie, Trump did not do this and that, he didn't fulfill any of his promises. He wasn't anti-establishment except for some weird tariffs and trashing trade deals (and no, trade deals did not cause the decline of manufacturing). The average Republican voter isn't economically insecure. It doesn't work to explain to them why they should vote for progressive policies (and yes, the Democratic Party is progressive, the two parties aren't same except for "identity politics" ). They're not voting for that. White working class Republicans vote for white identity. Identity is important. Few Americans are union members and don't have a strong sense of class or society, as Europeans do (why Europeans don't mind high taxes). The Democratic Party is the party of the working class -- most of them voted Democratic. Anti-establishment populism isn't attractive anymore.
