(5,370 posts)114. I grew up near the auto plants and am married to a retired steelworker. Got to see all this stuff
up close. You may be right; the industry was too far gone. I've thought lately that tariffs would have been a 70s solution, IF they'd been implemented. But we were going to be a service and professional economy, or so it was said. No one foresaw the internet, 3-D printing, etc.. We're in a heavily union area and the one bright spot seems to be the so-called gold collar industries. Plumbing, electrical work. My stepgrandson is an early 20-something journeyman pipefitter, and owns an house, a nice truck, all sorts of toys. The younger folks are being guided in that direction, which is a good thing.
