7. The guy up the hill from us used to have a ginormous Trump banner hanging from the 2nd floor...

He replaced it with TRUMP in Xmas lights on the hill behind him. He has a thoroughly defaced US flag in the front of his house — hard to tell what-all is on it because of the drape, but I think it’s Trump’s face and a MAGA slogan.

I stood there staring for awhile, just me and DH and the dog, and finally gave voice to what troubled me: 20 years ago I was working with a group of combat veterans against BushCheney’s war, and they took the American flag seriously as a symbol of what they had fought for, the promises made to them and the promises broken, and what this country was supposed to stand for. I think they would be seriously offended by the way the flag is being defaced today — by Trumpistas, but also by people who want to make an in-your-face statement about how they support police by defacing the flag in their own cause.

The cult of personality is chilling.
