They had a vibrant pharmaceutical business, until the island's tax exemption status ended in 2000 and big pharma pulled out of the island. Then when islanders on Vieques complained about a Navy jet dropping a bomb on a security guards shed, with the security guard in it, Bush closed the Roosevelt Roads Naval Base crushing the islands east coast economy...a death blow.

Then Trump came on the island to salvage the Del Mar Golf Course Country Club, and lost $33 million declaring bankruptcy, but Trump finagled the bankruptcy in such a way that he just stuck the PR government with the bill. PR sued Trump and lost. So if you're ever wondering why he would insult Puerto Ricans tossing paper towels at them and more, the bankruptcy/lawsuit is a big part of that story.

And now they lose the island's crown jewel, the Arecibo Telescope. Time we give them a break after so many decades of abuse.
