(171,528 posts)(like Gene Wilder) which was extremely rare for Hollywood. His work on "Blazing Saddles" was another example of his ability to incorporate humor across races without the negative racial stereotypes, which is often tricky to do even when done by black comedians.
The pick scene was just hilarious and Eddie Murphy's guest appearance was even funnier. The helmets all 6 of them had on were "'fro shaped" too. It helped to make his films cross-over favorites.
There is a pick sculpture on the plaza in front of Philly's Municipal Services Building (installed next to the now-removed Frank Rizzo statue).

Because the coiffed tall afro was a common hairstyle by the mid-'70s (what many of us would called the "J5 'fro" - in reference to the hair styles worn by the Jackson 5), the pick was very popular and a big seller, and was not only used for combing and shaping, but as a hair ornament, so many of them were decorative. Spaceballs came out when the hairstyles had switched to the Jheri Curl in the '80s, but people were still fondly remembering "the old days" of the "Afro sheen Blow-out kits".
