as illiberal hostility and extremism have grown on the left. It's not just happening on the right. Its something some on the left have in common with some on the right.

Something to think about is that those vulnerable to the social media algorithms that channel people along increasingly strong counterculture-to-extremist paths come from both right and left.

Preferences for naturopathic treatments, for instance, are seen among people of all degrees of mental balance on both sides. But for some vulnerable to negative, fear-based influences, triggering algorithms by googling these topics lead them to links and groups breeding increased suspicion of the FDA, GMOs, surveillance, Democrats, and from there farther and farther down the extremist rabbit hole of great, irrational certainty.

Psychiatrists have found it's extremely difficult to restore rational, reality-based thinking to people who've gone too far. Professional counseling can take months, and even years. And who gets professional counseling?
