2. This is why Senate Republicans don't want an actual trial

They very tidily swept the First Annual Trump Impeachment Trial under the rug last year, not receiving any evidence or testimony about the articles of impeachment sent over from the House. It was such a rousing success that Senate Republicans want to do it the same way this year. Without evidence, without testimony, it's super easy to just squawk "Partisan witch hunt" and go back to soliciting donations for their next campaign.

But you start hearing testimony, start reviewing evidence, run the clip of Trump exhorting his armed and violent mob to storm the Capitol Building and all the nasty sequelae, and it becomes a little tougher to hand wave away the whole messy business. Why, some of their own constituents might pose impertinent questions about why their Senator didn't vote to convict Trump in the face of all this "beyond a reasonable doubt" evidence?
