My Republican mother eventually thought Nixon had to go, but NOW, she is choosing the Trump sycophant and traitor Kevin McCarthy over former congressman Bill Thomas, who recently called McCarthy (his former office intern and staffer) out in a very damning way for promoting the myth of a stolen election. My mom was head of constituent services for Thomas. She worked for him for thirty years, and basically worshipped him, but since she gets her marching orders from rightwing media, she is unreachable in terms of facts or principles; it's all about being on Team GOP, which now means Team Trump, no matter how low he goes. I mean, she first insisted Trump's candidacy was a joke....then she began to worry it was being taken seriously and said she could never vote for such a despicable person, that he just couldn't be the nominee, that the idea made her sick....then she supported Kasich in the primary.... then Trump became the nominee... then my mom said people like Romney needed to stop saying bad things about Trump... then she flew 3000 miles to attend the inauguration.
To see her turn on Bill Thomas ("he should have kept his thoughts to himself" regarding McCarthy's shameless support of the Big Lie)-- the rare Republican who apparently still has some suggestion of a spine and a remaining vestige of a principle--has been startling. She has always chosen party over family, but I never anticipated the day would come when she'd throw Bill Thomas under the bus. (She threw me under it a long time ago.)
