The senior US Navy POW during the Vietnam War, James Stockdale (Medal of Honor recipient and retired as a Vice Admiral) used to say this regarding colleagues who once wavered in their commitment to the Code of Conduct during their ordeal but then bounced back:

"It is neither American nor Christian to nag a repentant sinner to the grave"

Emphasis on repentant, people.
