There are, I think, two fundamental reasons Republicans will acquit Trump. First, they're not really afraid of Trump, especially now that he's been banned from Twitter and Facebook so that he's lost his megaphone. But they are afraid of the Republican base and they fear that if they cross them they will be primaried and lose their position of power.
That's the second and deeper reason that the Republicans are sticking with Trump. Deep down in their fetid souls, they KNOW they cannot win elections honestly. They KNOW that their positions are held by less than 35% of the country. The KNOW that they can only hold onto power through anti-democratic means: Gerrymandering, voter suppression, technical challenges to ballots, denying a sitting president his Supreme Court nomination and so on.
Republicans KNOW that unless they cheat they will lose power. It really is that simple.
In the end, I think that Trump is finished. Far too many Americans are just plain tired of him. As more time elapses, he'll become less relevant. The person we need to fear and prepare for is the Republican who is just as corrupt as Trump but is a lot smarter. With Trump, we were fortunate he is so stupid that he broadcast his plans and his own weaknesses. The next guy won't be so foolish.
