7. Quite a few, actually

We prided ourselves on our "deep bench," but having a deep bench of intelligent people doesn't not translate out to a deep bench of winners. As we have seen so often in the past, it's not enough to run a candidate who would be a great president if we can't elect them.

Both Jimmy Carter and Fritz Mondale would have made far better presidents than Reagan. I suspect Mike Dukakis would have done better than Bush, Senior as well. It didn't help much in 1980, 1984 or 1988, did it?
