(4,201 posts)The lack of vaccine distribution in SE PA is nothing surprising given the state's distain for the Philly area. Yea, no one is doing terribly great but every day that the vaccine is administered to someone that's one more person closer we get to herd immunity and one step closer to returning to "normal". A lot of our problems can be traced back to isolation and prohibition of our regular social routines. We'll all be better off when we can congregate like we used to do.
What's more troubling in PA is the Legislature's attempt to seize the reigns of PA Government from the Executive and Judiciary branches. Republicans have controlled both sides of the Legislature for the better part of 3 decades and I don't see that changing anytime soon. The Legislature has passed a number of ballot amendments to give them a check on the Democratic advantage on state-wide voter registrations. On the Judiciary side they want to redo state-wide elections to the courts and make districts across the state. Of course there will be more districts where Republicans outnumber Democrats so the final state court make up will be more reflective of rural Republican areas than suburban and urban Democratic areas.
On the Executive side, there are several amendments that will allow the Legislature override any future Governor's emergency declarations; Governor couldn't extend emergencies beyond 21 days. The Legislature could also override any emergency declaration by a Governor.
Of course these amendments are on a Primary ballot not a General Election ballot. PA has a closed primary and a lot of Independent voters. So turnout will be low and a lot of folks won't bother showing up to just vote for amendments. I won't be surprised if turnout is light and these amendments pass.
