I responded to a classified ad in the Miami Herald for a temporary position at the MPD, doing some kind of legal research. I was interviewed by a police lieutenant who spent the entire time trying to convince me I should become a cop. I suppose the guy thought I'd make a decent cop.

At the time, Miami was awash in drugs, teeming with corruption, with city officials taking payoffs and most cops embroiled in just about every form of criminality imaginable. At some point during the interview, probably imagining myself as the next Sonny Crockett or Rico Tubbs tearing around the city in a Ferrari, the prospect of becoming a cop seemed so absurd I started laughing and couldn't stop. I never took either job.
