But a special counsel looks for violations of law with an eye towards bringing charges. The vast amounts of info they gather is never released to the public outside of any court records or final reports they may release, which in turn are heavily edited and redacted.

Congressional hearings are real time. They are intended to focus public attention and document what is known and can be verified. They are completely different processes. One if judicial, the other is political.

Somewhere in the middle is a body like the Warren Commission which attempted to find facts on the assassination of president Kennedy. We all know that that fully ended all conspiracy theories on both sides of that issue, right?
