(37,182 posts)It's a common misconception. People think that going to college prepares you for a career in the field that you studied, and that's incorrect. Most undergrad programs prepare you for graduate work in that field of study. It's why so many people have a really hard time transitioning from college to a career. One of the reasons why the elite schools are such a draw is that they have alumni networks and are favored by some large employers for recruiting.
We need a better, cheaper, and much more effective system for educating and preparing people for careers of their choice, and vocational programs are the best method. And when I say "vocational", I am talking about everything from plumbing to marketing to computer programming to the law.
If you want to be an academic or do research or teach, then you should go to college and onto graduate school.
