Back home in Mother Russia, he doesn’t have to worry about being asked uncomfortable questions. Anyone who dares to try is quickly squelched.

It's a lot easier to look like a big, strong, powerful leader when you can arrange things so that you are never publicly challenged. Take away that ability to control everyone around him, and he is revealed as the petty, spiteful tyrant that he is.
