Two Cuyahoga County anti-discrimination initiatives aim to protect LGBTQ community

The discussions are timely. Two transgender women have been killed and two others attacked in Cleveland this year. And according to Human Rights Campaign's tally, one seventh of the nation's fatal attacks of transgender people in 2018 happened in Cuyahoga County.

The charter amendment is sponsored by councilmembers Dale Miller, Sunny Simon, Yvonne Conwell and Shontel Brown, as well as Council President Dan Brady on behalf of the Charter Review Commission.

It would also add sexual orientation and gender identification to the list of classes protected against discrimination for employment, housing and public accommodations. If passed, Cuyahoga County would join about 30 Ohio cities and counties that offer those protections for the LGBTQ community; state law does not.
