9. Replacing the Ogalalla Aquifer

Some clueless and inconsiderate types proposed appropriating some land in NE Kansas for use as a reservoir for water from the Missouri River. The water would have then been transferred to SW Kansas to water the corn crops there. Property would have had to been taken over for an aqueduct that would cross crop land, state and interstate highways. Several pumping stations would have been required to overcome the rise in elevation. The potential for a 30% loss of water during transfer caused some heads to rattle.

Fortunately, calmer heads and a lack of reliable funding collapsed the idea for the present.
