(15,909 posts)It was indeed safe for a few months for vaccinated people to go unmasked in many situations while the unvaccinated still needed to remain masked.
That's was correct health guidance. It is social science, not health science, that many unvaccinated people would use that situation to unmask too. You don't falsely tell people at low risk that they are at high risk just to keep them wearing masks. Perhaps the CDC could have added, "but please keep wearing your masks no matter what, so the unvaccinated can't get away with pretending to be vaccinated", but again, that's social science and politics, not health science.
Now a new variant has emerged that can be transmitted by the vaccinated too. So the CDC guidance has changed. And it will keep changing as conditions and data change.
It's easy to be "right" when your standard for "right" is zero tolerance for risk, but real life is always a risk/benefit tradeoff.
