(11,767 posts)Recall elections against California Governors are not unheard of. Gavin Newsome has been effective in getting a solid Democratic agenda in place in California so naturally the people who oppose it are going to abuse the initiative process to go after him. Republicans are not super popular in California electoral politics so they will often have to use the initiative process to try to remain relevant.
To be honest, Newsome has done some things personally (the French Laundry fundraiser) that were really unforced errors.
In regards to New York. No one made Cuomo sexually harass 11 women that we know of. Cuomo has been effective (for the most part) in leadership around COVID-19. However, when there is a pattern of misconduct, your leadership in an area, even a major one like handling COVID-19, is not a reason to continue support.
Republicans will use whatever is at their disposal to remove Democratic politicians from office. The Newsom and Cuomo situation are VERY different from each other. Democratic leaders need to be smart and disciplined because unlike Republicans, who have no real moral or ethical values, we Democrats will police our own. Cuomo brought his situation on himself. He got his due process, unlike Al Franken. Newsom's situation is entirely partisan politics. I expect him to survive, though it is up to Democrats in California to turn out to make sure this farcical recall goes down in flames. I just hope that Newsom learns that while he is fairly popular, he needs to stop being arrogant and believing that he gets to follow a different set of rules than the rest of us.
