(1,954 posts)To be good, you need a lot of corollaries; Firm moral ground, the financial/social standing to hold true to your morals, dedication to what you perceive to be right and a willingness to sacrifice of yourself for the betterment of the world around you. It takes time, effort and energy to be "Good" and in the end, you walk away with a personal net loss of that time/energy. Being "Good" is functionally a sacrifice.
Being evil, though, is fundamental. You simply do what you wish. You take what you want. You see someone being "Good" and take their sacrifice for your own gain. Greed and power are just means to an end when you're "Evil", tools to abuse the "Good" to enhance your own status. There's a reason most people we'd consider "Evil" are also considered incredibly rich/successful. Take away benevolent morality from someone and their reservations/hesitations are removed, unleashing them to do whatever they wish at any cost.
It takes a great multitude of people being "Good" to outweigh the "Evil" of far fewer, as we're seeing in the political arena right now. The right wing has perpetuated a culture of "Fuck you, that's why", and while we may hold the political powerhouses of the White House and the Legislature at the moment, the Repubs are winning on the undercard; The judges, the state and local legislatures, and most importantly, in the media. They can, and do, lie, cheat, and steal, and the left seems to have few if any answers for them; When called out on one lie, they simply lie again, and that's a major benefit of their 'Evil'. They are unaccountable to anyone except themselves and their like-minded peers, and can be as "Evil" as they feel they can get away with.
Being "Good" can't counter Evil like that on an even playing field.
