Newsom talks about it splitting the vote. I'm not sure enough people would vote for the same democrat anyway.
There is thinking that if the recall passes and Elder takes over it will be for the remainder of Newsom's term and then Elder has to run again and he would be the choice most democrats would want to run against.

A write-in candidate would be a good option but they have to file and time is running out.

It's confusing to a degree.

The recall in CA is a badly abused feature. It was a Progressive reform, but is used wrongly. UTUSN Aug 2021 #11
