when traveling through Georgia which I have done hundreds if not thousands of times over the years, I always preferred staying at the truck stops in the Atlanta area. I never felt comfortable outside of the Atlanta beltway, where the racial tension was palpable. I would hear racist rants, and arguments on the CB provoked by white drivers so often I'd shut it off unless there were unusual road conditions. Same thing at the truck stops where I'd occasionally observe assaults or other confrontations that began on the CB, or started in the restaurant and proceeded to the parking lot when African American victim of verbal abuse / fighting words finally had all he take. This type of behavior by whites tended not to happen in Atlanta.
