To mature and be the nation that our founding documents aspire to. To actually lead the world by example with maturity, social consciousness, and sound thinking or to retreat from the world stage and mired in our own consumerism and self indulgence.
Reagan came along and told Americans that we were the best, and didn't need to do anything to show it.
Which do you think Americans would choose?
Carter was correct. Americans have always had an inflated sense of our own importance, but there was a time where we did actually aspire to lead and be better. Conservatives have encouraged us to rest on past glories and our stature has shrunk steadily with brief periods where Democratic Presidents have tried to repair the damage.
