(26,485 posts)vulnerable populations as if they don't matter. There are many people who will end up hospitalized or die from omicron because they have compromised immune systems due to cancer treatments, transplant surgery, or have diabetes, are pregnant, have AIDS, or are over 65. If you think that seniors are expendable, consider our Democratic president who is pushing 80 and our House Speaker who IS in her 80s and doing an exceptional job.
That's what the OP is saying. People who are vaxxed, boosted, younger than 65, and consider themselves in good health keep repeating that the omiclcron variant is no big deal. Well, it IS a big deal for vulnerable people. They are the vaccinated ones on respirators, dying in hospitals, along with the unvaccinated. When you discount them with claims that omicron is no big deal for the vaxxed and boosted, you are discounting them as expendable and not worth considering.
A person needing surgery is vulnerable even if vaxxed and boosted. When they are recovering from surgery, they are weak while their immune systems work overtime to repair and heal. Add a disease like covid, even if a mild case, and you overtax their immune systems.
I spoke with a local hospital nurse earlier today when I encountered her in a store. She said that they are getting vaccinated people every day to put on ventilators because they are cancer patients who would otherwise live to go in remission if covid did not exist. Some are very young. She is caring for grandmothers and grandfathers whose grandchildren will not get to know them because people are recklessly saying, "It's only omicron. Nothing to worry about if you are vaccinated and boosted." For some people, it is a LOT to worry about. But society has become callused and indifferent to them.
