6. I don't know what the rule is in NY state courts, but in federal court

you can't appeal from a discovery order because it's an interlocutory (not final) order - the only thing they could do is fail to show up for the deposition and then appeal from the contempt finding that would follow. It might be different in NY, though - we'll have to wait and see, but I'm sure they'll do whatever they can to avoid the depositions or at least drag out whatever the procedure turns out to be.
