I have little doubt that Putin's goal is to attack and control any country not part of NATO at this point.

He already has Belarus and Georgia in his grasp and soon, he will have Ukraine the greatest prize of all.

We will be is a similar situation as we were at the end of the Cold War in 1990, although seven former Soviet nations are now in NATO: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, Bulgaria, Romania and Slovakia and Slovenia part of the former Yugoslavia.
