The Russians have been losing the messaging war, badly. What better way to start turning Western sentiment than showing images of racist violence against refugees and/or sparking division among our allies?

Color me suspicious. Because disinformation is something the Russians have proven themselves experts at; they know exactly what pressure points to push.
