Assuming that simply leaving is possible, that's what I'd do. If not, I (and my wife) would simply ignore it. I most certainly wouldn't walk over and put hands on the person doing the ridiculing.

Know why? Because I'm not a toddler and I have self-control, as does my wife. Also, there are precisely six people on planet Earth whose opinions/thoughts truly matter to me. If anyone outside that group ridicules me or my wife, I really don't give a damn. The most important reason I wouldn't put hands on this hypothetical person is that the first person in line to call me a dumbshit after the fact would be my wife. She would be disappointed in me for that loss of control, and as you might imagine, she's one of those six people.

I'll grant you that it's highly unlikely that someone will ever ridicule my wife in front of a global audience, but I don't think that really changes anything. Putting hands on the person doing the ridiculing is still not the correct response. Time-honored tradition in film notwithstanding, real life isn't a movie.
