Of course I wouldn't have. Voluntary mask-wearers are, by and large, more courteous and considerate of others, so we tend to scowl behind our masks at the asshole who's working so hard to help spread the pandemic.
My job brings me into dozens of homes and businesses each week, and nearly every customer tells me that I don't need to wear my mask. I have multiple replies, tailored to my audience:
1. Thanks, but then you'll see that I didn't shave this morning.
2. Thanks, but I'm just a bare skull under this cloth.
3. Thanks, but then you'd turn to stone like all the others.
4. Thanks, but then you'd be able to spot me in a line-up.
5. Thanks, but then there'll be two ugly faces in this conversation.
6. Thanks, but I have to wear it for all of pledge week
7. Thanks, but then you'll probably tell me to take my pants off.
8. Thanks, but I'm not wearing a mask.
9. Thanks, but I can't take it off until I've fulfilled my destiny.
10. Thanks, but can't remove my mask in the presence of others. This is the Way.
Or, to keep it simple, I say "Thanks, but I prefer to keep it on, all things considered."
