26. I know this from experience: First Responders are helpless in the midst of a hurricane.

Christie was right to tell people that he cannot send people into the middle of a storm. Things will kill them as readily as they will kill those who didn't leave.

During Katrina my sister received call after call (911 operator) pleading for help from people who stayed. There were ten feet of water and everything that would have told anyone where they were...markers, roads, signs, everything...was obliterated. She, and I by proxy, have not yet gotten beyond the helplessness. My job was to watch CNN and try to tell her what was going on as she was locked in a building upstate trying to coordinate a million calls and had nothing but generator power and no TV.

When the storm is over the First Responders can help. Not before.
