In reply to the discussion: Chris Christie: FU You're on you're on your own. [View all]nolabear
(43,850 posts)26. I know this from experience: First Responders are helpless in the midst of a hurricane.
Christie was right to tell people that he cannot send people into the middle of a storm. Things will kill them as readily as they will kill those who didn't leave.
During Katrina my sister received call after call (911 operator) pleading for help from people who stayed. There were ten feet of water and everything that would have told anyone where they were...markers, roads, signs, everything...was obliterated. She, and I by proxy, have not yet gotten beyond the helplessness. My job was to watch CNN and try to tell her what was going on as she was locked in a building upstate trying to coordinate a million calls and had nothing but generator power and no TV.
When the storm is over the First Responders can help. Not before.

This is why Christie and similar aren't suited for leadership, he can't think of others in need

Gov. Malloy in CT said the same thing. People were warned. First Responders should not have to

That's a terrible paraphrase. I saw the conference, and he was correct, and correct in his tone.

I hate the guy but he said it with valid reason. He told everyone to evacuate.
