(2,102 posts)People who insist that things never change and that certain things "are a given" need to remember how much the world really has changed.
My grandmother was married off to a distant cousin when she was 16 years old. I married fairly young because I was raised to believe that finding a husband was the most important thing that I would ever do and that I couldn't really take care of myself.
Well, I divorced that guy after 14 years and I have survived in the world for the past 28 years. I'm not surviving with a lot of style, mind you, but I'm still here.
So, yeah, the world is a mess, but look how much things have changed just in my own family in two generations. I have a lot of confidence in the generations coming after me. Remember Emma Gonzalez and David Hogg? And then there was Naomi Wadler who also spoke at the March For Our Lives Rally.
Every single advance forward for the rights and dignity of all people has been hard won. And there have been claw backs on those gains every step of the way. But not one of those gains was earned through an attitude of defeatism.
Unlike many others, I'm not going to pretend to know what will happen with the mid-term elections or in 2024. I know what I hope will happen and I know what I fear. But no matter how hard my fear tugs on my hope, I'm still going to vote. That's the least that I can do and it will at least earn me the right to complain if things don't go my way.
