It's been a relentless push by big money/big corporations to keep the trajectory moving evermore to the extreme right since 1980.
They really want no regulations at all on the ways they practice capitalism.

To achieve this they pander to the right wing religious control freaks who are all about regulating everyone else's behavior. They've made a lot of progress toward their goal.

Now those fundies are reveling in their illegitimate, strong armed, cultural pay off takings for all those years of votes in support of the greed of the top 2%.
