(3,409 posts)I just retired from teaching, and because of what I taught (Health) the kids were more likely to open up and be honest with me, and I've seen a sea change in attitude, especially in the last 10 years. The positive side is they seem to be making better decisions regarding their sexual activity, and using protection if they are active. A lot are waiting...not so much for marriage, but for the right person and time. But they're pretty pragmatic. I taught at a Title1 school, so there was a lot of poverty, and these kids saw first hand what happens when a baby shows up. The girls also watched the important women in their lives get pregnant, and then basically abandoned with no support. But they never had the common experience that every woman in every former generation had...knowing someone who had an illegal abortion. If the family had the means to go to a private doctor, it was "taken care of" in the office. Like my mom, who told her doctor she COULDN'T be pregnant again, and she suddenly needed a biopsy on some uterine tissue. If the family didn't have the means, we all know how those turned out.
But even with the brainwashing that has been going on, if the shit hit the fan, they'd go to the local clinic. The basic attitude seems to be, "I wouldn't do it, but I'm not going to get up in your business." And now they're also seeing first hand WHY we did all that marching.
