12. Everybody knows the Democratic message: government.

Right-wing attacks on Democrats: big government overreach, tax & spend, socialism. Attacks from elsewhere: shadowy Democratic "establishment" ignoring the working class, "identity politics," not being socialists.

So everybody knows Democrats are the government party, for equality, health care, social safety net, civil rights. Republicans are the anti-government party (until it comes to taking away rights from anyone who is probably a Democrat). That's why people get so mad when Democrats are in office. Carter/Clinton/Obama/Biden: why didn't they fix everything immediately? They're the government! Only Democrats are blamed. Suddenly the federal government is expected to fix everything everywhere in a very large country with state governments and Democrats are mocked as losers for trying to help people by trying to make government work.

But somehow the Democratic message is a big mystery.
