Oct 2012

I got hit hard twice last year, trees down and power out for nearly a week from both Irene and then the Halloween snow.

Monday was nerve racking. The wind relentless. The lights constantly flickering but we never lost power. No trees down in my yard or in my neighbors'. The rain was relatively minimal, about 1.16". I thought North Jersey got off easy until I tried going out yesterday morning. Just on my block there are 8-10 huge trees down, about half took down wires to the home.

Travel is nearly impossible, so many roads are blocked by downed trees and wires. It is nearly unbelievable. I didn't even try to go anywhere today except by foot. Damage from the snow last October was extensive but I think this is worse. Too many unlucky people killed or seriously injured by falling trees.

Halloween has been postponed until Monday by executive order.

The Jersey shore finally caught the big one. The damage is not surprising. After all, much of our shore is barrier islands, which are temporary structures that exist at the pleasure of Mother Nature.
