136. You don't know the term, and then blithely sail forth and use it wrongly. What the hell?

Opaque means non-transparent. It does not mean they did or did not pay money settlements. Glass is not opaque. A wood box is opaque. It doesn't matter if the glass box or the wood box cost $10 or $10 million. Paying a million dollars for a wood box will not make it transparent.

The internal processes of the church were hidden behind opaque barriers because nobody outside could see them or know what was done. Nobody outside knew what happened to the priests except there were no trials and no punishment under law and no reports (still no church reports!) and no redress for victims. That was all by design so that the church could protect its reputation, or so it thought. But these things come out and now the result is worse for the church.

Transparency is the opposite of opacity.

The church processes are still largely opaque. The church is shielding some notorious priest from away that they moved to France instead of bringing him to a proper accounting in the courts.
