(1,690 posts)Ones that claim to support liberal causes, but won't vote for the more liberal candidate because they're not ideologically pure enough. I am trying to point out several things.
One is that at least according to what they say they agree with these liberal causes, but when push comes to shove they often support protest candidates who cannot win. We are fond of saying that Republican voters vote against their own self interest, how would we describe the ideologically pure liberal voter who will draw support from the more liberal candidate with a chance of winning.
Another, and this is painful for many of us to admit, but the main body of the Democratic Party engages in hippy punching more than occasionally. We really can't expect the more ideologically driven part of our community not to take offense when we tell them that what they believe in doesn't matter and shut up.
As far as I can tell a pretty substantial portion of the right would vote for burnt toast if it had an R after it's name, and honestly we cannot expect to ever get those votes. There are still some sane people who vote R because that's what they've always done and historically the R has been more closely aligned with their values. Then there are the people who should be voting for the more liberal candidate even though they don't like some of their positions (I didn't say all because if a liberal person hated all of that candidates positions how did they get an D). The first group is lost, think of them as dedicated fascists. The second group might be able to be reached, but how much effort is required. The final group is a WTF is wrong with you. Think Susan Sarandon, Jill Stein. Your actions hastened all the causes you claim to be against, so either you're lying or you are not thinking this through.
If the Justice Democrats are lying about what they believe, not simply useful idiots but actual agent provocateurs then we should expend our energy to expose that. Attacking their positions that are somewhat in alignment with ours because the Justice Democrats hold them is engaging in the same moronic ideological tit for tat they're playing. The Rs actually do win then.
And for the record I do think they're wrong plenty of the time. Even this makes me cringe. Its hard to be tolerant of other peoples beliefs, she's not quite making it.
Finally until we have some other scheme than a plurality in a general election, voting for non-viable third party candidates is voting for your opponent.
